MEDIA TRAINING

WHAT IS MEDIA TRAINING?

“Media training” is a broad term.

Simply put, it's helping an individual, a company, or a group understand "what the media wants" and preparing them to speak to a representative of a media organization such as a newspaper, television station, website, blog, radio station, podcaster, Tik-Toker, and the list goes on-and-on.

Bottom line: someone will be asking you questions and I will prepare you to best answer them with clarity and confidence while avoiding being caught off-guard and making any gaffes.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

As each organization is unique, I would start with interviews to learn all about your goals and then collaborate on a curriculum tailored to your needs.

This could mean group sessions or one-on-one coaching.

Curriculum areas would include, but are not limited to:

  • What the media expects from good public information officers
  • What the media expects from leadership
  • How to be a more effective communicator for internal and external audiences
  • How the media works
  • Effective and ineffective ways to handle messaging/response
  • What makes a story "newsworthy"
  • What questions you could be asked
  • Why reporters ask the questions they do
  • Why reporters want certain documents
  • Why it’s important to provide certain documents before being asked
  • The timing of a news cycle
  • The lifespan of a story
  • How a one-day story can become a week-long negative-publicity escapade
  • How to avoid long-lasting negative coverage
  • How to talk to reporters, on the phone, live, on camera or in a recorded interview
  • Effective public speaking
  • Practice on-camera interviews
  • A practice incident scenario
  • Dissection of a real life scenario, what went wrong and right, lessons learned

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

In depth media training or interview skills could be hard to master in a one-time training session.  The goal is to provide meaningful, lasting coaching.

Depending on your needs, the program could include a number of follow-up or coaching sessions on as-needed basis, especially brushing-up before an actual interview.

Media coaching, especially interview training, is more effective in person.

However, if necessary, the coaching services and follow-ups are available on the phone, via Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or FaceTime.

Services are offered on a per-hour or per-project basis, as well as on a retainer.
